One of the UK's oldest universities, Durham is also considered one of the UK's best consistently ranked in the Top 10 in most ranking guides. The original college of Durham University was founded in 1657 though teaching had taken place at Durham Castle prior to this. Durham University's Royal Charter was granted in the 1830s after overcoming centuries of resistance by Oxford and Cambridge universities. Durham Castle is the oldest inhabited university building in the world thanks to University College, which remains both a place of teaching and a residence for students.

Today, Durham University spans two campuses: the historic campus in Durham City as well as a campus situated in Stockton-on-Tees where the Medical School and some business programmes are taught. Durham's excellence is apparent across all subject areas.
