Birkbeck, University of London, is one of the world's leading institutions devoted to part-time and evening teaching. Founded in the 1920s, Birkbeck has evolved into a research-based university that focuses on evening teaching to allow for workers in London to attend class after work. Full-time international students are also accommodated by studying a full-time load of these evening classes. This makes Birkbeck a unique option for international students looking to study at UK universities. As a result of this teaching model, there is a far larger percentage of UK students studying at Birkbeck as well as a higher percentage of professionals. This makes for a much more well-rounded experience compared to some other universities.
Birkbeck does not participate in traditional rankings surveys since so many of its students study part-time. However, recent measures such as the Research Assessment Exercise and student satisfaction surveys usually place Birkbeck near the top. Birkbeck often attracts the best academics in their fields since they are able to research during daytime hours unlike more traditional universities where research must take place around teaching and is often interrupted.
